Is there a way to check the status of my MeLCat order?

You can check your MeLCat requests at MyMeLCat. You may also ask a staff person in-person at the checkout desk on the 2nd floor, or call them at (616) 526-7197.

How long does it take to get a book after I request it through MeLCat?

The typical wait time for a MeLCat item to arrive is three to four days. It could be slightly shorter or longer than that, however.

How do I find out if something is peer-reviewed?

One way is to search the UlrichsWeb database, which you can find in our A-Z databases list. (Only members of the Calvin community have remote or off-campus access to our databases). Once you are in UlrichsWeb, you can search for your journal title. If it's peer-reviewed, it will have a small icon of a referee's shirt in the column to the left of the title.

Can I reserve a study room for a day or more?

Where are the restrooms (bathrooms)?

There are restrooms (bathrooms) on every floor. The 2nd floor has a unisex restroom and men's and women's restrooms. 3rd floor has only a women's restroom. 4th floor has a men's restroom and a unisex/single user restroom. On 5th floor there are both men's and women's restrooms.

Who is the librarian for religion (or nursing, education, English, etc.)?

How do I search for the title of a book?

Go to the library catalog and change "Keyword" to "Title" in the drop-down menu on the left.

Where can I get help with genealogical records and family history?

Heritage Hall specializes in the history of the Dutch in Michigan. It is on the library's 2nd (main) floor. You can search the collections online as well as ask for help from staff. In addition, you can consult the Hekman Digital Archive for photographs of Michigan communities

Who is the Dean (Director) of the Library?

Is the library open on Sundays?

FALL 2020: No Sunday hours.

Under normal conditions, we are open Sundays from 1pm to 6pm, 2nd floor only. All other floors are locked. Also, there are no library services on Sundays, including checking out of materials.


What can I do when a book is checked out?

You can first check the due date. You can also check for additional copies in the Hekman catalog. If there are none available, you can search in MeLCat and request it from there.

My document isn't printing. What can I do?

There could be many reasons for this. Go to the Research Desk for help. If no one is there, you can find handouts there that explain how to fix the problem on your own.


How long can I check out a book?

Our policies state that Calvin students may check books out for two weeks at a time (and can renew them to keep them longer). Graduate and seminary students may keep books for six weeks, PhD students for six months, faculty and staff for six months, and alumni and guests for two weeks. 

Where is the Meeter Center?

The H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies (official name; sometimes shortened to "Meeter Center) is on the 4th floor near the theological librarians' offices.

Where are the new books?

FALL 2020: With limited access within the library building, new non-theological books will not be shelved in their own location.  Please ask at the main checkout desk (2nd floor, phone: 616-526-7197) if you have any questions about where to find new books.

New books for the university are normally displayed on the 3rd floor against the east wall. New books for the seminary are on the 4th floor outside of the Meeter Center.


When is Peet's Coffee open?

FALL 2020: Peet's Coffee will be open when the library is open, but only for "grab 'n go." There will be no seating in the area. All safety precautions apply: social distancing and masks. 

Peet's Coffee's normal hours: Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and closed on Sunday. These hours are subject to change, however. 


Where is the Career Center?

The Career Center main office is off of the large library lobby (with the fireplace) on the 3rd floor of the library building. The office number is HL372.

How many times can I renew an item?

When are librarians at the Research Desk?

FALL 2020: There will be no librarians (or student research consultants) at Research Desk. We will provide reference and research help exclusively online through our live chat from the library homepage, text (616-214-3355), by email and by appointment

Librarians staff the Research Desk in the afternoons from 1:00pm to 4:30pm on Monday through Thursday, and from 1:00pm to 3:00pm on Fridays.  At other times, our Library Research Consultants are available to help with your research process. For more information, see our desk schedule.


Can I print without my Calvin ID card?

Yes, you can print without your ID card. You can print from Google Cloud Print and you can also email an attachment to print@calvin.edu. You should save your file as a pdf for best results. Check out the library's policies in regard to printing.
